CITIZENS for Sanctuary

CITIZENS for Sanctuary is a campaign by the CITIZEN Organising Foundation to implement the findings of the Independent Asylum Commission.

CITIZENS for Sanctuary aims to secure justice for people fleeing persecution and to rebuild public support for sanctuary.

  • SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATION - Tees Valley CITIZENS for Sanctuary persuade the Border Agency to provide travel expenses to people who travel to Stockton and commit to finding 'local reporting centres for local people'
  • CITIZEN ACTION - South Wales CITIZENS for Sanctuary sets up internship scheme for refugees and people seeking sanctuary in Wales
  • PUBLIC ACTION - 30 CITIZENS welcome Zimbabwean PM Morgan Tsvangirai to meeting they helped broker with Mayor Johnson and succeeded in winning the PM's backing for the Zimbabwe Strategic Internship Scheme
  • PUBLIC ACTION - Over 60 people march from Middlesbrough to Stockton to highlight the injustice of having to walk 12 miles to report to the Border Agency. Covered on BBC radio and tv, and in local press.
  • SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATION - 3 new locations for 'Friends of Lunar House' service agreed by the UK Border Agency
  • CITIZEN ACTION - £20,000 worth of vouchers exchanged per month in 9 locations across the UK to ensure that people forced to live on vouchers have access to cash for essentials
  • SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATION - 5 places at Manchester Metropolitan University worth a total of £75,000 secured for young people seeking sanctuary
  • PUBLIC CAMPAIGNING - Over 1,000 CITIZENS for Sanctuary supporters from across the UK turn out for the historic Strangers into Citizens rally on May 4th
  • CITIZEN ACTION - 50 internships offered in businesses, charities & public sector to give Zimbabweans the skills and experience they need to rebuild their country
